How To Use Wine Bottle Opener

Raise your glass and toast to the finer things in life - like wine, of course! If you're new to the world of wine, or even if you're a seasoned connoisseur, knowing how to properly use a wine opener is crucial. Welcome to Black Wine Club's guide to mastering an essential skill in wine appreciation: opening a bottle of wine with style, ease, and confidence.

Types of Wine Openers

Before diving into the how-to, it's important to understand that there are different types of wine openers in the market. Here are the most common ones:

  • Waiter's Corkscrew:

Also known as a sommelier knife, this is the most traditional and widely-used type of wine opener. It has a fold-out corkscrew, serrated foil cutter, and a lever.

  • Winged Corkscrew:

This opener has a T-shaped handle and two levers (or 'wings') on the side. A worm is driven into the cork, and pulling up on the wings lifts the cork out of the bottle.

  • Lever-based Opener:

The lever-based opener is a user-friendly gadget with a lever that pushes the worm through the cork and another lever that lifts it out of the bottle.

  • Electric Openers:

Useful for opening many bottles quickly and easily, an electric opener requires little effort, making it a popular choice for entertaining or commercial purposes.

How to use a Waiter's Corkscrew

  1. Cut the foil:

Hold the wine bottle steady and use the serrated foil cutter to remove the foil around the neck of the bottle.

  2. Insert the worm:

Unfold the corkscrew and slowly twist the worm (or spiral) into the center of the cork. Ensure that the worm goes in straight and doesn't break off the cork.

  3. Engage the lever:

Once the worm is fully inserted and only one spiral remains visible, place the lever (or 'lip') onto the edge of the bottle. Hold firmly for leverage.

  4. Remove the cork:

Press down on the handle, and the lever will gently lift the cork from the bottle. Once the cork is almost out, pull up gently to fully remove it.

How to use a Winged Corkscrew

  1. Cut the foil:

Remove the foil around the neck of the bottle with a separate foil cutter or using a blade.

  2. Position the opener:

Place the center of the opener above the cork, ensuring that the worm is aligned with the cork's center.

  3. Insert the worm:

Twist the handle to drive the worm into the cork. As you do this, the side wings will rise towards the handle.

  4. Remove the cork:

Press down on both wings simultaneously to lift the cork out of the bottle.
