Choose the Right Corkscrew

Having the right tool is half the battle. There are various types of corkscrews available in the market, but the following three are the most popular:

  1. The Waiter's Friend - Also known as a wine key, it's a versatile and compact tool that's easy to use once you've got the hang of it.
  2. The Winged Corkscrew - This type is more user-friendly with its two levers that ease the cork out as you twist the screw.
  3. The Lever Corkscrew - The easiest to use, but also more expensive. Just place it over the bottle, and the lever action does all the work for you.

    1. Remove the Foil - Cut the foil below the lip of the bottle using the foil cutter or the small knife found in most corkscrews. Peel back the foil to expose the cork.
    2. Insert the Corkscrew - Hold the bottle securely with one hand, with the other hand insert the tip of the corkscrew at a slight angle into the center of the cork. Straighten the screw and continue turning it clockwise until only the last curve is visible. For winged corkscrews, ensure both wings are fully raised before proceeding.
    3. Extract the Cork - Depending on your corkscrew type:
      • Waiter's Friend - Place the notch of the lever on the bottle's lip, holding the corkscrew handle, gently lift the cork.
      • Winged Corkscrew - Grasp the body of the corkscrew and use the wings to lift the cork.
      • Lever Corkscrew - Press down on the lever(s) to lift the cork.
    4. Remove the Cork from the Corkscrew - Once extracted, twist the cork counterclockwise to separate it from the corkscrew.
    5. Inspect and Serve - Examine the cork for any disintegration or odor. If all is well, proceed to pour and enjoy your wine!
