The Shoe Method

Quite possibly the most famous alternative wine-opening method, the shoe trick involves placing the bottle in a sturdy shoe and then banging the shoe against a wall in order to force the cork out. Here's how to do it:

  1. Remove the foil from the wine bottle and expose the cork.
  2. Find a sturdy shoe with a thick sole and place the wine bottle in it.
  3. Make sure the bottle is secured properly in the shoe, and the base of the bottle is aligned with the shoe's base.
  4. Hold the shoe firmly while gripping the neck of the bottle tightly.
  5. Bang the base of the shoe against a wall with medium force, making sure the bottle is perpendicular to the wall. Be cautious and make sure the wall is solid – we don't want holes!
  6. Repeat this process until the cork starts to emerge from the bottle. Once the cork is out enough, pull it out with your hands or a pair of pliers.

Keys or Screwdriver Technique

If you have a set of keys or a screwdriver handy, you can use them to pry the cork out of the bottle. Here's how:

    1. Remove the foil to expose the cork.
    2. Choose a key with a long, sturdy key blade or a standard flathead screwdriver.
    3. Insert the key or screwdriver at a 45-degree angle into the cork.
    4. Turn the key or screwdriver to pull up the cork as much as possible without breaking it. Keep turning and lifting until the cork is halfway out and can be gripped.
    5. Pull the cork out with your hands or pliers, if necessary.

    The Hot Water Trick

This technique involves using heat to expand wine gas to push the cork out. Follow these steps:

    1. Remove the foil from the bottle to expose the cork.
    2. Fill a container with hot water.
    3. Hold the bottle, neck down, at a 45-degree angle, and immerse it in hot water for a minute or two. Make sure the cork doesn't get wet!
    4. As the bottle warms up, gas in the wine will expand, slowly pushing out the cork. Once the cork is out enough, pull it with your hands or a pair of pliers.
