The Method

The Method

The technique for opening wine with a lighter is actually quite straightforward, though it may take a few tries to master. It's based on the idea of leveraging heat to expand the air inside the bottle, ultimately pushing the cork out. Be sure to exercise caution and common sense in attempting this - do it under adult supervision and away from flammable materials or surfaces.

Step 1: Prepare the Wine Bottle

  • Remove any foil or plastic wrap from the top of the wine bottle.
  • Ensure the bottle is dry and free from any labels that may catch fire.
  • If possible, choose a wine bottle with a deeper punt (the indentation at the bottom) as this may reduce the risk of glass breakage.

Step 2: Applying Heat

  • Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle to the ground, providing easy access to the neck of the bottle.
  • Ignite the lighter and hold the flame 1-2 inches below the cork, pointing upwards toward it.
  • Focus the heat on the air trapped between the bottom of the cork and the surface of the wine. It's important to avoid direct contact between the flame and the glass, as this may cause it to crack.
  • Rotate the bottle slowly, allowing the heat to disperse evenly.

Step 3: Keep an Eye on the Cork

As the air trapped between the wine and the cork heats up, it will expand and push the cork outwards. Keep a close eye on the cork and remove the lighter as soon as it begins to visibly move.

    Step 4: Remove the Cork

Once the cork has partially pushed itself out (about a quarter of an inch), turn off the lighter and let the bottle rest for a moment.

    • Using a cloth or towel to hold the cork, gently twist and pull it out, being careful not to touch the hot surface of the glass.
    • Give the bottle a moment to cool down, then pour carefully as there may still be some residual heat.
    • Voila! You've successfully opened a wine bottle with a lighter.
