1. Gather Your Tools and Chilled Bottle

Before starting, ensure that your bottle of sparkling wine has been properly chilled to around 45°F (7°C) for the best flavor and bubble control- typically 3 hours in the fridge will be enough.

Next, gather the necessary tools for opening a bottle of sparkling wine:

    • A clean towel or cloth
    • A wine key or corkscrew (optional)

    2. Remove the Foil

Firstly, take the clean towel and drape it over the bottle's cork area, holding it firmly. This ensures that the cork won't go flying if pressure is released. Most sparkling wine bottles have a foil or plastic covering which needs to be taken off to expose the cork. Using the blade of your wine key, carefully trim the foil around the bottle's neck, just below the protruding bottom lip of the cage. Peel away the foil and set it aside.

    3. Ease off the Cage and Cover the Cork

The cage, or muselet, is the wire fastening that secures the cork in place. Locate the twisted loop on the cage, take the key of your corkscrew, and twist it counterclockwise to loosen the cage. After 6 full turns, the cage loop should be free from the bottleneck. Before completely removing the cage, make sure to cover the cork with the towel- the key here is caution and control.

    4. Grasp the Cork and Twist the Bottle

Keeping the towel covering the cork, firmly grip the cork with your non-dominant hand and hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle. With your dominant hand, hold the base of the bottle. This position ensures increased control and a reduced chance of spillage.

Now, in a smooth and controlled motion, twist the bottle slowly with your dominant hand while maintaining a firm grip on the cork with your other hand. Avoid pulling or twisting the cork itself, as this could lead to either breaking the cork or an unnecessary eruption of bubbles.

    5. Listen, Feel, and Gently Release

As you continue twisting the bottle, you should start to feel the pressure pushing the cork out. Gently ease the cork out with control, letting the buildup of gas push it from the bottleneck. Avoid letting the cork suddenly pop out, which could result in a mess or even an injury.

Instead, listen for a gentle sigh or hiss, indicating that the pressure has been released and the cork has been safely removed.
